“Ransomware” has an increasing popularity recently, the average ransom is around NT$20,000. In some extreme cases, the kidnapped files were not fully recovered even after paying the ransom.
Here is a special reminder that the most effective way to protect your important files is to back up these files on a regular basis, and remember to keep these backup files offline.
The so called “offline” status means that after the file backup is completed, do not allow any computer to have the opportunity to modify these backup files. For example, you can prepare a “USB drive” and connect to the computer when backing up. After the backup, remember to unplug or offload “USB drive ” from the computer. In this way, even if the computer is kidnapped by “ransomware”, the offline backup files can still be used to continue working on another normal computer.
Following are the precautions for “ransomware”:
1. Important files should be backed up regularly (preferably back up to other computers, cloud storage or self-prepared USB drive), so that they can be quickly recovered even unexpected situation happened.
2. Keep the security updates of the operating system and application software from time to time.
3. Install anti-virus software and update it regularly.
4. Do not open or click on unsolicited emails.
5. Do not click on suspicious links.
6. Avoid opening suspicious email attachments since the malicious files may hidden in an archive and disguised as various files, such as .doc, .pdf or .jpg.
7. Do not download, install or execute unknown programs.
8. Please change your password regularly and do not use extremely simple passwords.
9. Do not provide personal information easily, and ignore any emails, websites or webpages that ask for account and password.
